Yesterday I talked about grains, heavy starches, and refined sugar, and, well, I’m sorry to to say that those aren’t the only things that are bad for you.
First, let’s talk about legumes. Legumes include all kinds of beans, including soybeans, green beans, lentils, peas, garbanzo beans (or chick peas), and peanuts. Peanuts?!?!?!?!?! Yes, peanuts are actually legumes, not nuts. A lot of people think legumes are good sources of protein, and people who don’t eat meat use them as one of their main sources of protein, but this is problematic. Yes, legumes have protein, but they are way higher in carbohydrates, which makes their protein relatively low. And, the carbohydrates in legumes make your insulin go up just like the others. Also, remember those lectins and phytates from yesterday? Those little boogers in grains that cause leaky gut and take away all of our nutrients? Legumes have them too. And of course, we all know the saying, “beans, beans, the magical fruit”. . . legumes are known for their inflammatory effects on the digestive system. It’s not just something funny that happens after eating a bean burrito; all that bloating and gas is not good for your insides. These are the main problems, but check out these articles for even more info:http://www.limitless365.com/2012/11/04/paleo-why-no-grains-dairy-and-legumes/and http://paleomagazine.com/paleo-why-legumes-are-bad.
Next, dairy. First of all, what the heck humans?! We are the only species on earth that drinks milk after infancy, and DEFINITELY the only species that drinks the milk of ANOTHER species. We’re weirdos.
A lot of people have obvious problems with dairy, just like with the gluten in grains (such as lactose intolerance, as well as other sensitivities). While it seems to affect some more than others, it is inflammatory in all of our bodies. People in other countries drink dairy that was raw and then fermented, because they know if they do not do this they will have lots of trouble digesting it (although even in this form it is still not the best thing for your body). In this country, not only is dairy neither raw nor fermented, it is super processed and produced in horrible ways, which causes tons of problems. Drink milk for strong bones?! Think again. The countries that consume the most dairy actually have the highest rates of osteoporosis (cough cough United States cough). We’re usually not even absorbing the calcium that is in milk, and it can even take away calcium from our bones. I know, I know, you’re thinking, “SO WHAT THE HECK ARE WE SUPPOSED TO EAT THEN?!?!”. I’ll save that for tomorrow.
